50 Shades of Blue: The Denim Edition

Happy Monday everyone,

I admit when I first saw the denim-on-denim trend (aka the "Canadian suit" or "Texas tux" depending on where you live), I wasn't a fan. Particularly, when both the shirt and the jeans are the exact same, it becomes too "farmer-girl" for my taste...and let's be honest, the pitch fork makes a poor accessory choice. The key is simplicity without predictability. Denim worn in unexpected ways makes it surprisingly refreshing. With this particular look, I wore light-wash distressed boyfriend jeans with a dark chambray top. The chambray material makes it light enough to be worn during the summer (it makes a great fall transitional piece too!).  I did not want to over-accessorize or wear a statement shoe. It would become distracting and take away from the denim. The simplicity mixed with denim's humble origins make it casually elegant, chic, and comfortable.

My husband and I decided to go to one of our favorite hang-out spots before dinner yesterday. Dubbed "the Fly" by local New Orleanians, it's a large park on the banks of the Mississippi River hidden behind the Audubon Zoo away from all the tourists and the frenzy of the city. You can actually hear the birds and the river passing by. It was a lazy Sunday afternoon with kids playing soccer, families bbqing, and people fishing. Ahhhh summer bliss!

Before we were married, this was one of the first places I took my husband to see. It holds a special place in my heart for a variety of reasons:

1) Childhood and college memories: I would picnic here with my family before going to the zoo. Years later, I would spend countless hours hanging out, tanning (yes - I was that delusional brown girl that tanned), eating crawfish, and listening to music here during my college days.

2) My parents would picnic here with Popeyes and chai when they first got married in the 1970's (pre-kids). Then when they kids came around, they did the same, but exchanged the chai for juice boxes.

3) My husband's parents (both Tulane Alums) also spent a considerable amount of time hanging out and doing all the stuff above during their college years.
ps: It hasn't changed at all since the 1970's - which is probably why both our parents still love it because it reminds them of their memories...and why we love it too because we're making our own.

Along with simple accessories, I kept my makeup simple as well. I'm wearing MAC's "Please Me," mixed with "Rebel" here, cat-eye liner, and just a little black smudge under the eye.

What are some of your own favorite summer hangout spots and memories?

Thanks for reading!

xoxo
